  • se is a screen oriented version of the classic UNIX text editor ed
It’s similar to vi as both are modal editors with curses interfaces. However, it differs from vi in that it has the same command syntax as ed. For example, in se to escape from append mode, you’d enter a line containing a single period instead of the vi way of hitting the escape key.

se has a long history dating back to the early 1980s. Beginning in 2013, Thomas Cort undertook the task of modernizing the early code and build system to get the software working on recent POSIX operating systems. The code base was straight forward and only used facilities available 25 years prior, and as a result, with a few modifications, it runs on many modern operating systems. Thomas' primary motivation is to preserve this bit of computing history. His goals are to squash any remaining bugs and make se as portable as possible. No major new features will be added.

  • Cowgol 2.0: Ada-inspired language for very small systems
    Main page is http://cowlark.com/cowgol/
It used to support the Apollo Guidance Computer used in the Apollo spacecraft, but I had to remove the code generator while rewriting the compiler and I haven’t reworked the AGC backend.

The author also ported the Fuzix operating system to the Raspberry π pico.

  • Port of the "Ritchie C compiler" to the TI990 series processors
This repository contains a port of the "Ritchie C compiler" to the TI990 series processors, in particular the 9995 and 99105 chips. The port is currently fairly complete; only floating point operations remain unported. Other tool chain components (assembler, linker, etc.) are also provided.

The long term goal is to run ancient unix on these chips. As a first stepping stone on that journey, a port of the original 1983 version of the Xinu system has already been completed. The source for that is also in this repository.

  • Old Unix cross-reference tool
Hyper-linked and cross referenced rendition of the sources, much like doxygen or lxr does it. The desired features were:

cover boot, kernel, networking, library and user level code
cover C, assembler and other relevant languages with syntax highlighting
provide 'what is used where' information, over the whole system
provide hyperlinks for a fast code path analysis, especially across the user, library, kernel interfaces
support to follow the execution logic of a system call starting from user code, through the library layer, through the kernel interface, to the kernel code by just following hyperlinks.

  • free gopherspace
The Mare Tranquillitatis People's Circumlunar Zaibatsu is an ideologically decriminalized world offering text-based asylum to those fleeing the commercialisation, bloat and surveillance of the wider net. The Zaibatsu offers 200MB of free gopherspace hosting to anyone who wants it for any non-commercial purpose. Gopherspace is managed via sftp. For further details, including instructions on how to request asylum, please visit circumlunar.space on port 70.

In addition to functioning as a free gopher hosting provider, the
Zaibatsu is also a small public access unix system.  A defining
characteristic of this system is that much of the software used by the
members for social interaction and other purposes is developed by the
members themselves, collaboratively and openly, on the system itself.
While only senior members can install software system-wide, *any* user
with shell access can clone the git repo for some tool on the system,
fix bugs or add features, and request their code be pulled into the
          system-wide repo.

  • Practical UNIX Manuals
So you've written a UNIX utility, library, or driver—or have started writing one—and you want to document your work in a manual. What happens next?
Practical UNIX Manuals: mdoc is a guide for writing portable and maintainable UNIX manuals (manpages) in the mdoc language.
Why mdoc? Formatters for the language are available by default on all modern UNIX installations and may be downloaded for non-UNIX systems. Furthermore, mdoc annotates content semantically, not presentationally, producing consistent manpages across systems. For an analysis of mdoc and competing formats, refer to Fixing on a Standard Language for UNIX Manuals, published in the USENIX magazine.
I also feature the History of UNIX Manpages http://manpages.bsd.lv/history.html , which chronicles the development of manpages from the 1960s to the present day.
