The Purely Functional Package Manager

Nix is a powerful package manager for Linux and other Unix (including OS X) systems that makes package management reliable and reproducible. It provides atomic upgrades and rollbacks, side-by-side installation of multiple versions of a package, multi-user package management and easy setup of build environments.

This is the first half of a two-part blog post that is motivated-by and mostly "about" two software ecosystems I've been poking around at recently. The first (and subject of this post) is I'll roughly call "interactive scientific Python", which includes primarily SciPy/SymPy/NumPy, IPython, and Sage; the second (subject of next post) is a new interactive scientific language Julia, which has a lot of complicated and subtle relationships with the former. If you hate Python, skip this post because it is really just background for why I care about the fate of a few Python packages.

HelenOS is an open-source microkernel-based multiserver operating system written from scratch. It runs on several different CPU architectures (IA-32, x86-64, SPARC V9, IA-64, PowerPC, ARM, MIPS). HelenOS prides in portability, modularity, clean design and coding style.

It does not mimic any existing system and it is not meant to be POSIX-compliant or UNIX-like at all. Just as an example, HelenOS does not support fork().
